Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mugnano Data Consulting do?

We help teams adopt, tune, secure, and automate Greenplum/MPP data platforms. Outcomes include faster onboarding, predictable operations, optimized application design with governance built into the developmemnt process, and measurable performance gains.

Which platforms do you support?

We specialize in Greenplum Database, Apache Cloudberry, SynxData, and other PostgreSQL-derived MPP systems.

What is database onboarding?

Onboarding is the process of standing up a new database environment and aligning it with best practices for hardware, OS, network, and cluster design. With Greenplum/MPP systems, it includes validation with workload tests, training for SysAdmins and DBAs, and a detailed Cluster Install Report.

What is the DBA Operations Kickstarter?

A focused enablement program with automation (partition maintenance, health checks, backup workflows), runbooks, and training so DBAs can operate Greenplum confidently.

What is the difference between logical and physical data modeling?

Logical modeling defines business entities and relationships (the “what”), while physical modeling implements them in a database (the “how”). We help clients bridge the two, especially for MPP platforms like Greenplum.

Why does modeling for MPP databases differ from traditional databases?

Because queries are distributed across segments, physical design choices like partitioning, distribution, and storage options affect performance far more than in single-instance systems. Having a Data Modeling Tool that allows you to include this in the model and generate full DDL makes the Tool an integrated part of development and not just a documentation tool.

When should I use partitioning?

Partitioning improves query performance on large tables and makes data maintenance (archiving, purging, rolling windows) easier. We provide automation to keep partitions aligned with business calendars.

What is dimensional modeling and why is it important?

Dimensional modeling structures data into fact and dimension tables, which makes analytics faster and easier for BI/reporting teams. This ease of reporting oftens enables self-service BI for the business users. We guide clients through Kimball-style designs and provide tooling adapted for MPP environments.
